A linoleum chisel is a specialized tool used in the art of linocut printing. These Pfeil chisels are also suitable to cut into wood.

Linocut is a printmaking technique that involves creating relief prints using a sheet of linoleum as the printing surface. Linoleum is sometimes mounted on a wooden block for stability. In linocut, a design is carved into the linoleum surface to create a relief pattern. The areas that remain uncarved (raised) represent the parts that will be printed.

Linoleum chisels are the primary tools used for this carving process. They come in various shapes and sizes, but they typically have a V-shaped blade or gouge. These chisels allow artists to cut into the linoleum with precision, creating intricate designs. Once the linoleum surface is carved, it is inked using a roller, and then pressed onto paper or fabric to transfer the design.

Linocut is favored for its ease of use, especially in educational settings, as it lacks the directional grain found in wood and is less prone to splitting. Artists can achieve various effects with linocut, although the resulting prints may differ from the angular graininess of woodcuts and engravings. Notably, linocut gained prominence through artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, and it remains a respected professional print medium in contemporary art.
