The use of a screw box and tap is fairly simple. Considering that this process is done manually, the choice of wood is very important (ideal wood types are boxwood and hornbeam). With the tap, it is theoretically possible to make external screw thread of unlimited length.
The tap is always fitted with a replaceable cutting blade. The internal diameter of the tap determines the external diameter of the wood and the leading end of the metal tap determines the diameter of the bore in the work piece.
